Portraiture

The classical view of a portrait is that it captures the “essence” of the subject, however that is not exactly true. The subject cannot be fully portrayed by a photograph because it is simply an image. The black and white extreme close-ups of a single face attempt to mimic this flaw in portraiture. It is impossible to tell from a single image what the face looks like as a whole. However, when the photos are taken as a whole, they become a much more complete depiction of the face, though still lacking in detail.
